Are you on Facebook? Myspace? or Linked In?

By: Crystal Liazuk

Staying socially connected for many of us is an everyday routine, whether it’s with Facebook, Linked In, or Myspace and now with the up and coming Twitter. I have heard employers talk about how they look at an applicant’s Facebook or Myspace page before they call them in for an interview. You don't want your page to be the first impression an employer gets from you before they meet you. Setting your page to PRIVATE as well as setting your picture and comment settings for your approval before it gets posted will help keep what you don’t want seen by those who can affect your future. You don’t want to be ruled out, before you make it to an interview, because of what your friends post on your page. I also think that putting a scenery photo for your profile picture is a great neutral picture.

Still going to networking events?

By: Crystal Liazuk and Michael Rocha

I have been to a few networking events, and I have to say it’s like watching VHS instead of streaming HD movies online, it’s very old school. I know a professional who has gone to networking events once a month for the past 8 years. This “group” has twenty to thirty members and holds networking events around Tampa. It’s the same guys, who talk about the same old things, who accomplish the same results, nothing. I told this professional about linkedIn, and of course he thought it was too impersonal, but I convinced him what a great tool it was. To make a long story short, he networked with more professionals in one week on linkedIn than he did in 8 years of attending networking events.

I’m not saying I will never go to another networking event again, but I would rather be working than attending networking events. Think about it, you may speak to 20 people at networking event and put in an extra 2-3 hours on your work day and not even make a new connection. Wouldn't you rather email 200-300 professionals who you really want to network with? It takes me a few clicks to reach a few hundred professionals and takes some people hours to speak with 20 professionals who may not be your best connection.

Job fairs draw larger and older crowds. DON’T be one of the crowd.

By: Michael Rocha

I was reading an article yesterday and the title was, “Job fairs draw larger and older crowds.” What does that tell you? Find the company before the company has the job fair. The title doesn’t state that no one is hiring, it says that companies are hiring and there are a lot of people who don’t do enough research. At a job fair you are 1 out of 500, but if you apply to the company direct, then you may be 1 out of 50. In any case, finding the company before a hiring blitz increases your chance of getting the job. How do you find these companies? RESEARCH!! Even if that means getting your hands dirty and opening the yellow pages and calling every company near you. Another way to find companies who are hiring is by calling a recruiter. I can tell you who is hiring and what is going on in the engineering field.

STAND OUT!

By: Michael Rocha

If you glanced at my outlook, then you would notice it is flooded with resumes from engineers! This is a great problem to have, especially in my business. I look at every single resume that is emailed, but I know other recruiters and clients who may not have time to look at resumes. So how do you get an employer to look at your resume? STAND OUT! I remember this time a girl mailed (not emailed, but mailed) me a beautiful resume and a portfolio on a CD. I thought to myself, if she took this time to mail me her resume, then she must be serious. What did she do? She stood out! When everyone is emailing resumes, then you mail resumes. Do you really want to stand out? Then overnight your resume by UPS! I promise you, whoever you UPS your resume to, they will look at it.

If you want to go a different route and be more creative then do a VIDEO RESUME. Check out this link…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kz9AODQkmiM and there you can see what I mean. It’s a GREAT IDEA!!!!! Now, with a video resume, don’t just email your resume link to an employer and say, click here for my resume. No, no, no…next to or under your email address on your resume (YES, it is good to have your email address on your resume) put the link to your video resume. For example, Video Resume : Link.

I hope these tips help! Also, when I say stand out, don’t do anything crazy, unless you see fit.

Interview, Interview, Interview!

By: Michael Rocha

I love setting up interviews with my candidates, it is one of the most enjoyable parts of my day. With every candidate I send on an interview, I will give that candidate interview tips. However, my tips can only go so far. In addition to my normal tips which are posted on our website, here are more tips for the perfect interview!

1. Go to bed early. If you go into the interview with little sleep, then you will not be able to give your best performance. This means you go to bed early, even if your interview isn’t until 4:00 in the afternoon. You have to have energy. DO NOT substitute RedBull for sleep, ever. RedBull gives you energy so quickly, you become jittery and nervous.

2. Eat right the day of your interview, and before. This is your big day, and eating the right foods will help you be more alert and increase your stamina. For example, who would have more energy and stamina, a person who had a Big Mac with a large Coke or a person who had chicken and vegetables? This means, have some scrambled eggs and OJ in the morning and eat a healthy lunch so you can have a great interview! You don’t see Tiger Woods eating fast food before he does his job.

3. Be prepared. If your interview is in the morning, then the night before have your suit laid out and pressed. Go a step further, put out your socks, shoes, tie, tooth brush, mouth wash, resumes, pens, portfolio/briefcase, directions, and any accessories you may need out. Make sure you have gas in your car too! This way there is no rush with no surprises, so now you have time to have a healthy breakfast.

4. If your interview is in the MORNING follow these steps! Wake up early. Eat a healthy breakfast. Jump in the shower. Before putting on your interview clothes you should shave/makeup, brush your teeth, and other hygiene needs. Put on your interview clothes and you are on your way. You can bring water with you and that is it. NO coffee, no cigarettes, no colored drinks, no gum, no getting gas, and NO FOOD after you put on your suit. Once you put on that suit, you can have water and that is it. If you have a cigarette, then say bye to that job for obvious reasons. I have had clients call and tell me my candidates smell like an ashtray. Then, I will ask my candidates if they smoked before then interview and I get, yes I smoked, but I covered it up! It doesn’t work so don’t do it.

These are a little extreme, but how bad do you want that job? I have more extreme interview tips so keep posted!
